A guide to evaluating health and wellbeing outcomes for community growing programmes.
A guide to evaluating health and wellbeing outcomes for community growing programmes.
The Growing With Schools project was set up by the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens to provide support for hands-on growing activities in schools, through a series of hubs, with experienced school growers helping new schools to set up and run their own sites. The project has now ended by some useful documents were created which are now available to anyone working in education and teaching who wants to use gardening as a practical part of lessons. Downloadable files are:
A comprehensive toolkit created by SF&G, to help community growing groups, particularly those who are more established, with the process of recording and archiving their valuable history.
A factsheet to help anyone charged with managing an allotment site develop strategies and solutions to tackle vandalism and security issues on their site.
This factsheet is one of a series of factsheets, along with a selection of sample tenancy and other legal document templates, that form a toolkit to assist in site management. All of these resources are available to download from: www.farmgarden.org.uk/allotment-site-management-toolkit
This factsheet is based on content originally published by the Allotments Regeneration Initiative 2011 and was reviewed in 2020 when Social Farms & Gardens worked with the Welsh Government to produce a range of resources to help ensure local authorities and others involved in the management of allotment sites in Wales maximise the potential of those sites for the local population. With support from the Welsh Government, SF&G Wales wrote a guidance document for local authorities, growers and growing groups in Wales which provides an overview of allotment site management.
Allotments provide a number of health and social benefits but are often inaccessible for the people they could most benefit. Many managers and associations are keen to improve access to their sites. The need to do so is underlined by the Disability Discrimination Act.
This factsheet provides an overview of the issues involved in improving accessibility and makes some practical suggestions for implementing them.
Includes contact details for a variety of allotment-based projects or sites demonstrating good practice in this area.

These videos are a useful illustration of the key issues faced by groups setting up, sustaining and developing any community growing project. They also give a fascinating insight in the way community growing groups develop and how SF&G has supported them.
Unlike most commercial farms, livestock reared and kept on city farms have contact with large numbers of people, many of whom will have no experience of livestock and may not know how to behave around farm animals. Close monitoring of the stock at all times is therefore of great importance to prevent misuse and/or ill-treatment.
It is important that each city farm's Animal Welfare Policy reflects the farm’s own individual circumstances. It is also vital that the policy is constantly developed through on-going discussions among the city farm's stakeholders, including those who will implement the policy.
SF&G promotes good practice and helps - through information, advice, access to training and examples of good practice - to raise standards from whatever position is currently practiced on a city farm
This pack is a comprehensive introduction to setting up, developing and sustaining a community-managed farm, garden or related community growing space. It provides easy to read advice and information on the issues you are likely to face; general information on the key areas of starting and developing your project; and routes to more specific and specialist advice.
A series of short films is available to accompany each of the key steps covered by this resource. They include stories and top tips from established community gardens, farms and other community growing spaces. These are available to view or download via: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheFCFCG
Note: This premium resource is available to all free of charge thanks to funding from the Welsh Government.

Rearing farm animals provides such a lot of interest, learning, and other opportunities, both for visitors to your project and those caring for the animals on a day to day basis. However, you must make sure you take the necessary steps to maintain both animal and human health.
