Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses (BPCG) is an independent environmental charity operating from a former municipal greenhouse site in the centre of Lambeth’s Brockwell Park. Our 3750m2 site comprises a series of demonstration gardens and facilities including two commercial-sized greenhouses. We use the space to host a variety of educational initiatives loosely based around wildlife, food growing and environmental education. Our activities include open access community volunteering, school visits, family events, courses and workshops, and a range of specific projects targeted at vulnerable sectors of the local community such as our weekly gardening sessions for SEN schools and community groups.
We are open to the public and for drop-in garden volunteering four days a week, Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm (GMT) and to 5pm (BST). On Monday to Wednesday the site is available for education sessions for children run on the site as closed and bookable sessions.
Our gardening activities are suitable for all types of people from the youngest to the oldest! If people are at all mobility impaired, we have plenty of seated propagation work. Equally, for those who want a real work out, there's soil to be dug, compost to be turned, trees to be pruned etc. Our large site is very varied, with woodland, many raised beds for veg growing, 2 commercial sized greenhouses, wildlife pond, herb garden, natural dye plants all on site.
For those interested in helping on our kids and families nature based education programme, we work 3 days a week on this and on some Saturdays and always welcome voluntary assistance here too.
Our charity is currently run by a board of trustees and our part time staff (Community Gardener, Education Officer, Education Assistant, and a Director) and a dedicated band of over 100 volunteers.
The charity is fundraising for their Greenhouses Community Fund to help support staff costs in the charity. They are also building a new community and educational space as well as creating a Learning Garden over the Autumn and Winter of 2021/2. https://www.brockwellgreenhouses.org.uk/donate/
