There are four main aspects to the GEML project: Growing Food, Cooking it effectively, becoming fitter, and reclaiming public open spaces. Grow it is focussing upon developing waste land sites for use as growing spaces by local community groups, such as the Coplow Street site.
The plan is to secure the longer term future of the land, and the GEML team is currently exploring options for management and ownership. For each grow it site, the local community group is provided with the land – GEML having negotiated its use – a plan of action for clearing and developing it, and a starter pack of tools and other equipment. The project is also working to develop growing ‘buddies’ to link local experts with people new to growing.
