The project aims to raise awareness of climate change and how residents and their families can help reduce their impact on carbon emissions, specifically by learning:
• how to grow plants
• how to grow plants to eat, and plants that are beneficial for the local environment, wildlife, insect population
• how to grow plants for beauty and improve mental health and well-being
• how to choose and group plants for maximum effect
• dedicating areas of the site appropriate for use by children and young people, older people and those with disabilities
• running after school and summer activities for children and young people on the estate
• involving participants in the design of the project
• extending the reach of the garden project. Of the 550 homes on the estate, around 200 have underused balconies. We will create a ‘mock-up’ of a balcony in the site and use it to demonstrate how to start growing plants on balconies, including watering
• extending the impact of the project by inviting agencies in the immediate area surrounding the estate to participate and share joint learning
