Our community is diverse. Our feeder estate, where many pupils come from, falls into one of the highest deprivation index categories nationally. 48% of our pupils are in receipt of free school meals. Poverty and unemployment are high in our community. Covid has only increased this. Cornwall is a rural and coastal county, however many of our children have not ventured off the estate. Many have not ever visited the coast or a farm. Some of our deprived families struggle for food and we have set up a food bank for them. Their understanding of where food comes from, how to make ingredients into meals is limited and this can cause obesity in our pupils. We want to change this. We want to set up a school farm, linking the urban school with the wider rural community. We want to give our community the chance to develop this with us, utilising their skills. The community around us, deprived as it might be, are passionate about the school and the children. Together we can create a sustainable farm. We will cook the food in our onsite kitchen. We will build the farm into our curriculum, giving purpose and providing an engaging and exciting learning environment. We will set up a shop run by local volunteers and our pupils/staff. The farm will allow us to bring the community together and teach about food, the environment and climate. The farm will support developing cultural capital - proving opportunities for the community and children that they would not otherwise be able to access. It will bring the community together . This will continue to build for years to come. The community is close knit and the school at the heart of it, the message will be communicated through school, local media and community groups.
