FEAST With Us (FEAST) is a food poverty alleviation charity with a mission to "Feed and Empower All Sustainably Together". FEAST’s core aims are to prevent malnutrition, promote community cohesion, and minimise food waste by emphasising the involvement of service users. On a weekly basis, FEAST's principal operation provides an essential food parcel service to 500 vulnerable individuals in North London with difficulties accessing basic and nutritious food provisions, such as individuals at risk of homelessness or with complex needs. The nutritious hot meals are made from surplus food, diverted from landfill, and cooked in community kitchens and shelters.
Over the past six months, FEAST has implemented a zero-waste pathway across its operations, supported by the North London Waste Authority, addressing food waste from cooking sessions and its attached environmental impact. Guided by the principles of circular economy, the project has led to the roll out of urban food growing projects and partnerships with local community gardens and schools. Where outdoor space is available at partner venues, FEAST intends to start on-site garden projects, using the compost made from any unavoidable food waste resulting from cooking sessions. This is particularly important to reducing FEAST’s reliance on surplus donations as well as offering recipient opportunities to build life skills, improving their access to healthy and fresh produce, and bringing food security back to communities. On-site gardening projects also have the benefit of social interactions between local volunteers and the vulnerable residents of the venues cooked from, bringing the community together. Where there is no outdoor space available, FEAST is partnering with local community gardens and projects for them compost FEAST’s organic waste, and offering gardening volunteering opportunities to get involved with these local gardens where appropriate.
