The Llanfendigaid Estate Gardening Community Project

The Llanfendigaid Estate is very keen to support and get involved with our local communities such as Rhoslefain, Llanegryn, Llwyngwril, Bryncrug, Tywyn and Aberdyfi.

Over time we plan on holding a few annual community events here. One being a garden open day, another being a wellness day retreat, another being a prom (live classical music) in the gardens. Essentially, a key objective of the estate is to do our bit to reduce social isolation and to help strengthen local communities.

As new custodians (we are Lisa and Gareth btw) of the estate, our first thought is to bring people together to engage in horticulture. With the aim of creating wonderful spaces to be enjoyed by many whilst acknowledging that being outside, and interacting with others is a great way to promote good mental health and wellbeing. We want wonderful gardens, full of colour and biodiversity. To have fruit and vegetables grown again on the estate, from vegetables during the spring to chillies and cucumbers in the summer. To have areas of wildflowers, rewilding, and tree planting.

We have three specific areas to develop first that all need some love and attention and some elbow grease. Following on from that, we have plenty of other land and woodlands to work together on!

We want to hear from a diverse range of initially up to 10 people of all different ages. We want some gardeningleaders who have the required horticultural knowledge and we want those with a total lack of gardening skills but who will make up for that with enthusiasm. It would great to have older, retired people sharing their knowledge with enthusiastic, keen to learn youngsters.

So, please make contact if this could be something you. If you have knowledge, ideas and/or enthusiasm. If you want to get involved and meet new people. Our initial idea is to do this one day a week through to the end of September / early Oct. From 10am to 3pm on a mid-week day (tbc). You can hopefully walk, cycle or hop on the train to get here to keep your carbon footprint minimal.

Our plan is for all produce (fruit and veg) to be shared by the volunteers and if we have surplus to donate to anybody in the local communities that will be grateful to receive some fresh, healthy food.

We will supply all the required gardening equipment. We will provide plenty of drinks and cake! Plus, for every hour of volunteered time we will donate £2 to local good causes. So, if we have ten people doing five hours per week for approximately three months, the total amount we will donate will be £1,200.

We expect anyone who comes to have respect for themselves, each other and nature. We will also have health and safety guidelines to be followed.

Before this project even gets going, we already know in advance that we are grateful for the community we are fortunate to be a part of. Please email Lisa and Gareth [email protected] and tell why you want to be involved.
