The Future Farms Partnership shares a vision for more agroecological horticulture enterprises across Wales - helping to meet the fruit and veg needs of our citizens and supporting a flourishing rural economy.
About the project
Future farms will include four phases including:
- Phase one - seeking planning permission to create four micro units for agroecological horticulture enterprises
- Phase two - developing extra planning guidance on supporting low impact agroecology businesses
- Phase three - creating and providing infrastructure
- Phase four - attracting growers and new enterprises
What we're working on
We’re currently looking for growers to join us in this vision through an opportunity to take on a new growing site in Powys under a 90 year lease near the village of Sarn. If you have two years’ experience and are ready to take on your own land for growing, please download an expression of interest.

Funded by Backing Local Firms Fund, we’ve supported Powys County Council to develop supplementary planning guidance to support and assist small-scale horticultural enterprises in the preparation of a planning application for a Rural Enterprise Dwelling (permanent or temporary). We then submitted a planning application to put three temporary dwellings on a Powys County Council farm holding that will be split into three horticulture enterprises.
Next steps
If planning permission is granted, we’ll start work on preparing the site in Sarn for dwellings and shared infrastructure across the three enterprises.
This project is part of a bigger vision for more nature-friendly horticulture enterprises in Wales to meet the fruit and vegetable needs of our population and sustain our soils for future generations. We’re working to drive supply and demand, supporting public sector bodies to purchase local, fresh and seasonal fruit and veg and equipping a new generation of growers to take up the challenge of feeding our nation.
