Advice for food growers and CSAs (Wales Only) Gaining Planning Permission
Planning issues can be complex and frustrating, but many horticultural enterprises do succeed in getting permission for the buildings and polytunnels they need. The important thing is to start right. Never invest money or time in land, or start development, before speaking to the relevant local planning authority regarding planning permission. When applying for planning permission, it is important to make a case that the structure is essential to the business and why you need it.
The Crop Cycle project provided a test bed for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) in the community setting – the very heart of our Foundational Economy. Four sites were established in Wrexham, Cwmbran, Rhondda Valley and Newtown.
The project was funded by the Welsh Government through the Foundational Economy Challenge Fund. It was led by Social Farms & Gardens and supported by Welsh Government’s Horticulture Cluster group and NutriWales CEA Special Interest Group.

This lovely booklet was originally produced for the North East Wales orchard project 2012. A few copies still exist and are treasured by their owners! Fast forward to 2020 and Social Farms and Gardens are supporting community growing groups to plant new community orchards across Wales funded by Welsh Government. Flintshire county council are also running a new project with 8 new orchards and equipment available to borrow for communities. We decided to reprint this excellent guide – with some small additions. We hope you enjoy it and find it useful.
